How to Know When It’s Time to Dissolve Your Lip Filler

Let’s be honest, lip filler can be amazing… until it isn’t. Sometimes, after multiple appointments, you may look in the mirror and think, “Wait… when did my lips start looking like that?”

Maybe your lips feel a little too full, the shape has changed, or your filler has started hanging out in places it definitely wasn’t invited to.

The good news? You don’t necessarily have to keep adding more filler to fix it. Sometimes, the best move is to dissolve and start fresh.

So, How Do You Know If It’s Time?

Your lips are looking a little too filled

If you’ve been adding a little filler here and a little filler there over the years, it can eventually add up. What started as a subtle enhancement can slowly turn into a look that feels heavier than you intended.

If you're thinking, “I just want my old lips back,” it may be time for a reset.

Your filler has migrated

Filler migration happens when a product moves beyond the area where it was originally injected. You might notice a little extra fullness above your upper lip or that your lip border doesn't look as crisp as it used to.

And no, adding more filler isn't always the answer. In some cases, dissolving the existing filler first can give your injector a much better canvas to work with.

Your lips don't look like… well, YOUR lips anymore

The goal of lip filler should be to enhance your features, not completely change them.

If you've noticed that your cupid's bow has disappeared, your lip shape looks different, or your lips feel less defined, starting over may help bring back some of that natural structure.

Your lips look uneven

A little asymmetry is totally normal, we all have it! But if your lips have become noticeably uneven after filler, dissolving may allow your injector to reassess your natural anatomy and create a more balanced result.

You just don't love them anymore

And honestly? This one is enough.

Maybe your aesthetic has changed. Maybe you want a softer, more natural look. Maybe you simply miss the way your lips looked before filler.

You don't need to have a "bad" filler experience to decide it's time for a change.

Why Not Just Add More Filler?

This is where the “more is more” mentality can get us into trouble.

If there is already filler sitting in places where you don't want it, adding another syringe isn't necessarily going to solve the problem. It can sometimes make things look even fuller or less defined.

Sometimes the better plan is:

Dissolve → Let your lips settle → Reassess → Start fresh.

We can then look at your natural lip shape and decide what, if any, filler you actually need.

What Happens When You Dissolve?

Most lip fillers are made with hyaluronic acid (HA), which can be broken down with an enzyme called hyaluronidase.

We can use it strategically to dissolve unwanted HA filler. You may experience some temporary swelling or tenderness afterward, so don't panic if your lips look a little different immediately after treatment.

The important part? Give your lips time to settle before making any big decisions about adding filler back in. We recommend 2 weeks minimum.

A Fresh Start Can Be a Good Thing

Dissolving your lip filler doesn't mean you failed at filler. It doesn't mean you'll never get filler again. Sometimes, it simply means you're ready for a reset.

If you're noticing migration, overfilling, changes in your lip shape, or you're just not loving your current look, talk to an experienced medical injector about whether dissolving and starting over could be right for you.

Because sometimes the best filler transformation starts with taking a little filler away.
